Navaratri 2015
Navratri
is a festival beyond reproach for most Indians. In a diverse country with many
beliefs, it is one of the very few festivals that are celebrated by all with
equal fascination. The festival celebrates Goddess Durga and her triumph over
evil. She is an epitome of power in the eastern states of India, especially
Bengal. Whilst the festival roots might seem east, Navrathri is almost every
time associated with Dandiya, the traditional dance of Gujarat, a state that
lies on the other end of the country towards the western coast!
The lunar calendar dictates the timing of the festival and
it is celebrated for nine whole days! The name itself means Nine Nights (Nava –
Rathri). The 10th day is celebrated as Vijayadashami or Dussehra and
done so in a grand fashion.
In the US, Indians often celebrate
Navrathri by dance in the form of Dandiya. It helps them let go of any
inhibition and enjoy like every true Indian does during festive times. 2015 is
special for Navratri
Dandiya events and there are a number of family events lined up!
